We learnt how to do a classic volumed hairstyle which would be great for a beauty or catwalk look. I was glad I learnt the skills to do this hairstyle, because it is important to learn the basics before you turn them into something funky. It is also important to learn a style to master simple skills; such as, making a clean section.
Another reason it was good to learn this style is, there is not always an opportunity to wash your model's hair. This style can be done from dry hair, all you need is a water spray and some hair product. Mousse or root lifter is great for people that have thin or heavy hair because these products will keep the volume in.
I chose to do the front section of my models hair, just so I could practise and get the motion of the brush and hairdryer right.
I started off with a clean section of hair, and it is important not to have a big section as the hair will take longer to dry which will loose volume. I then used some water to wet the section slightly because the shape of the will not change if it is bone dry.
I used a round brush very close to the head and gripped the hair with the bristles. Using the hair dryer on full heat and speed with a nozzle (to control the air), I held the brush upwards and began to dry. The brush needs to be vertical because this is how the volume will appear. Once each section of hair on the brush is dry, move it down but still keeping it vertical.
Check the section is dry by squeezing it, if it is cold, it is still wet. The hair must be dry otherwise the volume will just drop out.
To finish the hairstyle off, you could use some curling tongs for the bottom of the hair. This will finalise your hairstyle and enhance the volume.
As you can see the left of the models hair has more volume than the right. I agree there could've been more there, and next time I will definitely add some mousse to help keep the volume. I also think some backcombing will give some strength to the volume.
